Our Racist, Sexist Selves

1. the author thought that the U of Chicago test revealed him as racist because he had a quicker reaction to shoot a black guy with a gun then to shoot a white guy with a cell phone. But i dont think that this test can really say that your truelly racist.
2. Yes i think that these test measure “unconscious” racism because the way that the test was set up was sort of an unconscious way of taking a test. You dont have to think about your answers or anything, you just point and shoot.
3. the author thinkst that sexism may be harder to fight off than racism because in a research trial they put blacks and white, males and females in sport jerseies and told people to memorize the teams. And most of the people memorized not by race but by gender. So the author thinks that people are going to foreget race before they foreget gender differences.
4. this quote is saying that its hard for women to compete in political or buisness positions because women are more thought of as nice and friendly and stay at home with the kids, where as men are thought of as tough and strong, and people would like to think that their presidendt or boss is going to be tough and strong.
5. the real problem that women face according to the author is that women who are viewed as tough and strong are also typically perceived as cold and unfeminine. Many experiments have found that women have trouble being perceived as both nice and competent. I agree with the authors statement. I think that women who are tough and bold are more then less thought of as mean or something like that.
6. this problem can be confronted according to the author by saying that biases are not immutable. There was a study that said that students who had a large number of female professors also experienced a reduction in gender steriotypes.
Two part: DSP & race

DSP: i really enjoyed doing the digital story telling project. It was really different from anything project that we have ever done before and over all really fun. I thought that Sierra, Rosa and Nicoles was really well made with all the effects and music and stuff. Then i also thought that the one about robbing the fathers bank and then the brothers going after each other for the money had a really good story line and was a good way to show greed and guilt. I also thought that the way that James told his story was really cool and how he drew all the pictures for it. And I think that the story that the group I was in came up with was really creative and the way we sowed it was funny and well put together.
RACE: I dont know if the experience of living in America is VERY different depending on the color of your skin but im pretty sure that it is at least a little different. I think that there are still a lot of places in America that have a hard time dealing with racism. Like there is this one show and they create scenes in public places to record the peoples reaction. So one time they had a white man verbally abusing a white woman in a public park (both were actors) and after a while people would go and yell at the man and tell him to stop or get lost. But then they did the same thing only with a black man who was verbally abusing and yelling at a black woman, and it took like half hour to an hour before a woman went up to the man told him to take it somewhere else, not to stop but take it somewhere else. So ya i think that its a different living experience depending on what race you are but its not shown everywhere. I think taht race relations, hopfully, are only going to get better. So far in time it has only gotton better, so I think that it will still continue in this pattern.

we were trying to decide between three of our ideas and i dont think that we have settled on one yet but ill tell you about one of them. It about this griaffe named Jeffrey who is exteremely uncordinated. However his goal in life is that he wants to become a star soccer player on a select team. But since he is so uncordinated there was no way that he could do this with out a little help. So what Jeffrey decided do to was to take some steroids. The thing is that he become so huge and so buff that, yes he gets on the team, but then again people start suspecting things. In the end Jeffrey gets cought using the steroids and gets kicked off the soccer team. The moral of the story is that if you want something that takes work to get good at, dont cheat your way in, you need to earn it.

power quote

Frederick Douglass:
“Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.”
I totally agree with this quote and that it also really relates to our world today. So many times in the justice department a crime will come up and the person who did the crime will get off loose. Or only have to do a few months and then their back on the streets. This makes it neither safe for the property or the people. We or our surroundings could be vandalized. Then there is poverty. Poverty is so high in our world today. Its hard to drive, walk or fly anywhere without seeing a homeless person or a forgotten run down city. This makes it dangerous for everyone. For the people who are experiencing poverty first hand, they are prone to disease and death so much more then we are. But then it’s also not safe for non-poverty stricken people because poverty effects our natural environment like water and air. When there is no money for anything there is no way to fix broken water filters or anything like that. I think its safe to say that the world could do with a little less ignorance. Then there is the whole deal with classes and who is better then who and how much power does one person have over another. I don’t think that we see it that much here but it’s definitely in the air. If your walking down the street and you see a homeless person, you don’t usually think ‘o we are both human there fore we are equal’. Although it sounds bad, we usually think ‘ok ill walk on the other side of the street because they might ask me for something and I don’t really want to have to talk to them.’ This quote by Frederick Douglass is so true and so real in our world today.
LAW #14- pose as a friend, work as a spy
April 11th, 2008 by shorewood15 in Uncategorized · No Comments
There once was this soccer team. They were really good at what they did and the captins of the team were the most valuable players. Of coase everyone wished they themselves could be the captins but with a team of 15 people only 2 were captins. However there was this one really jealous player whos dream it would be to be one of the great captins of his soccer team. To be able to become a captain you have to have a perfect record and in all your years at school you could no have a grade lower then a B on record. So Gary, the jealous player had a plan. He was going to have some of Toms (one of the captins) friends spy on him, try to get him to say something about his past that would get him knocked off the position of captin. After several weeks one of his spys called him up and said that he had got something. They had gone out for coffee with Tom and because they had earned his trust he told them a secret that they had to swear they wouldnt tell ANYBODY. He had said how one time in eight grade the got a B- on a math test! He was so happy that the teacher had forgotton to put that grade on record. Gary went to action. he tracked down Toms eigth grade teacher and found out that this was true, Tom had gotton a B- on one of his math tests. He got the transcript and took is straight to the head advisor of their soccer team. Tom got busted and was removed of his captain responsibilities and Gary became a captain. His evil little trick worked.

so there was this one time when I had this huge spanish papaer to write. It included having to go out to a spanish resuraunt and take in count of the ethnic differences. We had a whole semester to do this project so I was like, ya no biggy I got plenty of time to do this. A week went by and still wasnt worrying about it. A few more weeks went by and by and by. Then came O MY GOSH IT DUE IN TWO DAYS!!! I had no time to go to a resturaunt let alone write a whole paper after words. I panicted i already had a D in the class but my teacher said that if I turned in this paper my grade would get bumped up all the way to a B because the project was 15% of our grade. I was so stressed from all my other classes that I did the unthinkable. I went to my friend who had the same teacher only in a defferent class period and asked if I could use their project from the semester before and then just put my name on it. So he gave it to me and I rearanged the foremat and put a different title and then put my name in the upper right hand corner. Then the fallowing day I turned it in. Finally the stressed was relieved. But then the next week I was called into the office and there sat my friend and my spanish teacher. All I could think was crap im busted. But thats not what happend at all, I got full credit for the assignment and he got a zero and his grade was lowered. I felt soooooooooooooooo bad. It was like I had a stomach ache for a whole month.

why shakespear?
March 19th, 2008 by shorewood15 in Uncategorized · No Comments
I think that the main reason why schools are required to teach shakespeare is because its so different from anyother book they could have us read. The english is very old and poetic and in most places it has a lot more meaning then a regular book would. Also probably another reason is because the books are also plays, and now they are movies, so it makes the learning a little more interesting when you can have a visual of the book. Each year since seventh grade when the topic of Shakespeare has come up my feelings are always, AH NOT AGAIN! but as we work through it and watch the movies they are a little interesting. Something that really helps when I read the books is how at the beginning of each scene there is a little summary of what is about to happen. So that even when i have no idea what is going on, i can look back at the summary and then hopefully it will clear things up. Even though I dont really agree, learning about shakespeare and reading his plays is probably worth while. Hopefully learning about Macbeth will get better just like in all the other books, but so far its just confusing and really weired.
